About the

McLellan Lab

Research in microbial genetics, oral pathogens, and bacterial physiology

The McLellan Lab

Our research is focused on horizontal gene transfer, a process by which bacteria exchange genetic information and acquire new traits. Horizontal gene transfer contributes significantly to the spread of antibiotic resistances, virulence determinants, and metabolic capabilities. Streptococcus mutans, a major causative agent of dental cavities, acts as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements within the oral microbiome. Therefore, our work focuses on processes of horizontal gene transfer that occur within S. mutans. Understanding the biology of S. mutans is critical as oral diseases cost over $136 billion a year in the US alone!

Research Team

Dr. Lisa McLellan

Dr. Lisa McLellan is an Assistant Professor of Biology. She completed her PhD in Molecular Microbiology & Microbial Pathogenesis at Washington University, St. Louis studying the host pathogen interactions that occur during urinary tract infections. Following that, she completed a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is excited to be at PFW, where she will be conducting research related to genetics, microbiology, and genomics.

Josie Bulter

I am a junior majoring in Biology and Secondary Education with a minor in Psychology. After graduation, I plan to attend dental school to become a general dentist.

Sadie Gerber

I am a junior Biology major with a concentration in Genetic/ Molecular/ Cellular Biology. After graduating, I plan to work in a Forensics lab as a DNA Analyst either here in Fort Wayne or possibly travel somewhere new. In my spare time, I like to read books, crochet pillows and blankets, watch some Rugby games, (Go France!) and spend time with friends and family.

Quinn Barabas

Alli Renno

Lauryn Brucchieri

I am a junior biology major with a focus in immunology and microbiology. After graduation I plan to attend medical school to become a physician. Outside of school I enjoy bass fishing, watching movies, and spending time with friends.

I graduated from PFW Spring 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a concentration in microbiology/ immunology. I am now pursuing a master’s degree at PFW, working as a student, researcher, and teaching assistant. Afterward, I hope to branch into pharmacy or research. In my free time, I work as a color guard instructor at Carroll High School!

I am a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry with an interest in microbiology and genetics. After graduation I plan to become a pharmaceutical scientist. In my spare time, I enjoy playing soccer and reading!

Our Accomplishments

Accomplishments of the McLellan Lab

Our Mission

In the McLellan lab, we value diversity, equity, and inclusion. Therefore, we welcome students to bring their whole humanity into our laboratory. As we tackle important questions in the areas of microbiology and genetics, we desire to empower students to claim their space with the scientific community and to recognize and achieve their full potential in STEM.
